                              Psalms 111:2

INTRODUCTION

1. Let’s begin by reading Psalms 111, noting in particular verse 2...

      The works of the Lord are great, Studied by all who have pleasure
      in them.

2. In the psalm, the works of the Lord are His works of redemption for
   Israel... - cf. Ps 111:5-9

[But in this lesson I wish to direct your attention to other great works
of the Lord, starting with...]

I. HIS CREATION

   A. THE WORKS OF THE LORD ARE GREAT...
      1. God created the heavens and the earth - Gen 1:1
      2. They declare the glory and handiwork of God, His power and
         deity - Ps 19:1-2; Ro 1:20

   B. HAVE YOU STUDIED THEM...?
      1. Like David, contemplating their beauty and intelligent design?
         - cf. Ps 8:3-4
      2. Viewing a starry night, an illustrious sunset, or even a single
         flower?

[Studying God’s creation can be enlightening and full of pleasure!
Another great work of God is...]

II. HIS WORD

   A. THE WORKS OF THE LORD ARE GREAT...
      1. David praised the value of God’s Word - Ps 19:7-11
      2. Even more so now that we have the living-giving words of Jesus!
         - cf. Jn 6:63; 1Pe 2:23-25

   B. HAVE YOU STUDIED THEM...?
      1. Like the truly blessed man? - Ps 1:1-3
      2. Reading that which provides comfort, hope and guidance? - Ro
         15:4; 2Ti 3:16-17

[Studying God’s Word is a source of comfort and great pleasure!
Especially as we learn about...]

III. HIS SALVATION

   A. THE WORKS OF THE LORD ARE GREAT...
      1. The salvation of mankind made possible by God’s love - Jn 1:29;
         3:16; 1Jn 4:9-10
      2. Saved by grace, through the washing of regeneration and
         renewing of the Spirit - Tit 3:4-7

   B. HAVE YOU STUDIED THEM...?
      1. With the aid of such passages like Romans 6? - Ro 6:3-7
      2. Reflecting on the consequence of such truths? - cf. Ro 8:31-39

[Studying God’s salvation gives great comfort to our souls!  Then there
is God’s work involving...]

IV. HIS CHURCH

   A. THE WORKS OF THE LORD ARE GREAT...
      1. That church built by His Son, purchased with His own blood - Mt
         16:18; Ac 20:28
      2. Which is the kingdom of God, the bride of Christ, the temple of
         the Holy Spirit... - cf. Col 1:13; 2Co 11:2; 1Co 3:16

   B. HAVE YOU STUDIED THEM...?
      1. With the aid of books like Acts, Ephesians, Colossians?
      2. Learning of the origin, spread, nature of and work of the
         church?
      3. Reveling in its simplicity in contrast to the institutionalism
         and denominationalism of today?

[Studying God’s church as revealed in the New Testament can be a
refreshing experience!  Finally, we can look forward to the great works
of God contained in...]

V. HIS PROMISES

   A. THE WORKS OF THE LORD ARE GREAT...
      1. We can look forward to the resurrection of the dead - Jn
         5:28-29; 1Co 15:50-58
      2. We can look forward to new heavens and new earth - Isa
         65:17-19; 2Pe 3:13; Re 21:1-5
      3. We can look forward to the new Jerusalem, the city whose
         builder and maker is God! - He 11:10,16; 13:14; Re 21:2

   B. HAVE YOU STUDIED THEM...?
      1. Pondering on how God will raise the dead? - 1Co 15:35-49
      2. Looking forward to that new heavens and new earth? - 2Pe
         3:13-14
      3. Reflecting on the great and precious promises? - 2Pe 1:4

CONCLUSION

1. We have considered only a few of the great works of the Lord...
   a. His creation
   b. His Word
   c. His salvation
   d. His church
   e. His promise

2. If you have not yet done so, study the great works of the Lord...
   a. Reflect on the beauty and design of God’s creation
   b. Read and meditate on God’s revelation (His Word)

As you do so, obeying the latter, you will find great pleasure both now
and in the hereafter..!
